ABDEL: ON READING, CULTURAL AND STUDENTS SAHARAN PEOPLE

Hometown image
The proposed last year in high school reading to 1 ยบ ESO Abdel of Enrique Paez. Was the preferred reading by students, according to their own evaluations, so we decided to keep to this course. The book narrates a very lively and simply, the story of a boy who lives as nomadic Tuareg in the desert Sahara and her father emigrated to Spain to try to improve their living conditions.

Reading in the classroom we are led to be commenting on the topics covered in the book: the Arab world, illegal immigration, drug smuggling and child labor exploitation and family values. To my surprise (I recognize that sometimes undervalue) students knew enough to place Morocco in a silent world map, most knew the language and religion of the country, some were able to cite specific characteristics of the Moroccan people (food, ethnic) and its geography (capital, major cities) and even a student had visited the country on vacation and told us his experience. Apart from this data, the highlight of the comments about the reading was the discussion and assessment of students regarding cross-cutting themes surprised me the ability of children to get into the skin of another, solidarity with others, to show their sensitivity to other cultures without the prejudices that adults have.

reflections
If the thread were interesting reading and the last course, this being even more successful, I know that many students see the news with their parents while they eat, so I left them the ones to bring forth the issue of conflict in Western Sahara. No time in doing so. To this helped also in the book quoted Laayoune. This has meant that we used to treat currently taking as an excuse to read and to do a little critical reflection on the situation. The next task to entrust them, in addition to Abdel shape the itinerary on a map and collect information about the terms that appear Moroccans will be to make a mural with news related to the Sahara conflict. The idea for the final activity me come out of the blue today .
